Oysterband gründeten sich um 1976 und wurde bekannt durch ihren einzigartigen Mix aus traditionellen britischen Liedern und neu aufbereitetem Folk-Rock. Als Oyster Ceilidh Band veröffentlichten die Engländer 1980 ihr erstes Album „Jack’s Alive“. Die Band erlebte einige Neubesetzungen, allerdings zählen John Jones, Alan Prosser und Ian Telfer seit 1976 zur Hauptbesetzung. Die Alben „Liberty Hall“ und „Step Outside“ befassten sich mit politischen Themen, umfassten aber neben neu geschriebenen Songs auch Neubearbeitungen von traditionellen englischen Liedern. 1990 erschien „Freedom And Rain“, das zusammen mit June Tabor entstand und Coverversionen von Richard Thompson und The Velvet Underground beinhaltete.

Ihren Durchbruch erlebten Oysterband 1992 mit dem Album „Deserters“ und dem 1993er Album „Holy Bandits“. Der angesagte Folk-Rock-Sound bescherte Oysterband auch Single-Erfolge wie „When I’m Up I Can’t Get Down“. 2016 erschien „This House Will Stand“, das neben 15 Best Of Titeln mit 14 unveröffentlichten Tracks, B-Sides und Alternative Versions aufwarten kann.
