About
JADE blends house-inflected beats with Donna Summer-esque vocals
After more than a decade as one-fourth of global pop phenomenon Little Mix, Jade Thirlwall has launched her solo career with poise and purpose – delivering a sound that’s both mature and boldly experimental.
Hailing from South Shields, JADE’s first brush with fame arose from a fortuitous audition for The X Factor, where the then 18-year-old was placed as a member of Little Mix. Arguably the UK’s biggest girl group export since the Spice Girls, the quartet made history as the first group to win the show, before going on to enjoy a remarkable 11-year career, selling an estimated 75 million records along the way. Characterised by their proclivity for anthemic break-up songs laced with powerhouse harmonies, Little Mix earned themselves 19 top-ten singles among which included hits such as ‘Wings’, ‘Shout Out to My Ex’ and ‘Black Magic’. Following The Confetti Tour in 2022, the group went on hiatus to allow its members to pursue their own projects.
Since then, Jade Thirlwall has ushered in a new era as a solo artist under the all-caps mononym JADE. Taking some time to establish a new creative direction independent from her Little Mix days, her debut solo single, ‘Angel of My Dreams’ arrived with a bang in 2024. The track, notable for its unconventional structure and sampling of Sandie Shaw’s ‘Puppet on a String’, was praised for its pitched-up vocals and revving synths. Its accompanying video, filmed partly in her hometown, also served to showcase Jade’s bold and uncompromised artistic vision. Follow-up singles ‘Midnight Cowboy’ (co-written with Raye and featuring a cameo by actor Ncuti Gatwa) and ‘Fantasy’ (produced by David LaChapelle), further defined this new disco-pop sound. Elsewhere, ‘IT Girl’ offers a boisterous take-down of the music industry, with Jade playfully chanting, “You’ll never own me / Na-na-na-na-na” over a thumping, bass-heavy beat.
JADE’s debut album, THAT’S SHOWBIZ BABY, released in late 2025, was led by the genre-blurring singles ‘FUFN (F*ck You For Now)’ and ‘Plastic Box’. Promising an intoxicating blend of club nostalgia and playful hyperpop, the record showcased her dynamic vocal range – shifting seamlessly between airy falsetto, velvety mid-tones, and syncopated, punchy phrasing. The album also heralds her first tour as a solo artist, which if her televised performance at this year’s BRIT Awards is anything to go by, will be a spectacle to behold. Winning ‘Best Pop Act’, JADE staged a theatrical, five-act version of ‘Angel of My Dreams’ – complete with costume changes, trapdoors and angel wing-enabled flying stunts.
