When looking back at the history of British music in the early 2000s, Franz Ferdinand is simply unavoidable. With their hit song Take Me Out and their unique blend of Britpop, post-punk, and indie rock, the Glasgow-based band created the soundtrack for a generation in 2004. Franz Ferdinand was formed in 2001 by lead singer and guitarist Alex Kapranos, bassist Robert Hardy, guitarist and keyboardist Nicholas McCarty (until 2016), and drummer Paul Thomson (until 2021). Drawing inspiration from the post-punk and new wave sounds of the 70s and 80s, they recorded their debut album Franz Ferdinand in 2003, which was released in 2004.

Proving they were far more than a one-hit wonder, their 2005 follow-up album You Could Have It So Much Better debuted at No. 1 on the UK charts and reached No. 8 on the Billboard 200, earning international acclaim. In Germany, both this album and its successor, Tonight: Franz Ferdinand (2009), peaked at No. 2 on the album charts. Earlier, Franz Ferdinand won Best Group and Best British Rock Act at the 2005 BRIT Awards, along with accolades at the NME Awards for Best Track (Take Me Out), Best Album (Franz Ferdinand), and Best Live Band (2006).

The band released three more albums—Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Actions (2013), FFS (2015), and Always Ascending (2018)—undergoing three lineup changes along the way. In 2022, they released their best-of compilation, Hits to the Head. To date, Franz Ferdinand has earned two Gold certifications in Germany, eight-times Platinum in the UK, and Double Platinum in the US and New Zealand, alongside Platinum certifications in Australia, Italy, and Spain. Fans are eagerly awaiting their next studio album.

In November 2024, Franz Ferdinand dropped their latest single Night Or Day, which presents their signature Britpop sound with a modern twist. Their seventh album, The Human Fear, will follow on January 10, 2025, and the band will showcase it on their sold-out European Tour 2025, including three concerts in Germany. On May 30, 2025, Franz Ferdinand will perform an exclusive open-air concert at Hamburg’s Stadtpark. Joining them as a special guest will be the up-and-coming band Sea Girls. With their latest album Midnight Butterflies, released under their own label, Sea Girls have climbed into the Top 5 of the UK charts and are regarded as one of the most exciting new indie acts from the UK.
