About
Doja Cat – This generation’s definitive breakout star
Since finding fame with the viral meme song ‘MOOO!’ in 2018, Doja Cat has gone on to become one of the biggest names in hip hop and pop music — earning countless Grammy nominations, breaking numerous records and never losing her irreverent, idiosyncratic personality.
Doja Cat was born Amala Dlamini in 1995 in Los Angeles. She dropped out of high school aged 16 amid struggles with ADHD, and began uploading music on Soundcloud. From here, she became a fixture in Los Angeles’ underground hip hop scene, leading to her meeting producer Yeti Beats, who has since become her go-to collaborator. Soon after she signed to Kemosabe Records, an imprint of RCA Records, and publishing company Prescription Songs. In 2014, she released her debut EP, Purrr!
In 2018, after a four-year release hiatus during which she struggled with writers’ block, Doja Cat released her first studio album, Amala. While the album didn’t chart upon its release, it was the first taste of the impossibly fun bubblegum R&B-hip hop that would soon take over the world. In August 2018, she released the parody track ‘MOOO!’ (sample lyric: “B*tch, I’m a cow”) and its accompanying, absurd music video online. It became a viral sensation, making Doja Cat an overnight star. Following this, she embarked on her first headline tour in North America and Europe, and released the deluxe edition of Amala. In 2019, a remix of the Amala track ‘Juicy’ featuring Tyga hit the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Doja Cat’s first appearance on the chart.
The same year, Doja Cat released her second album, Hot Pink. Here, Doja Cat levelled up, releasing a focused and confident work to wide critical acclaim. The album spawned numerous singles, including ‘Say So’ and its remix featuring Nicki Minaj, which became a smash hit, peaking at No.1 in the US (the first ever female rap collaboration to do so) and later being named by Billboard as one of the 500 Best Pop Songs of All Time. The song was nominated for two Grammys for Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance.
Through 2020, Doja Cat was a featured artist on numerous tracks, including Bebe Rexha’s ‘Baby, I’m Jealous’ and Ariana Grande’s ‘Motive’. At the end of the year, Doja Cat was named the biggest breakout artist of 2020 by Rolling Stone, and appeared on Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list. She also received a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist.
In 2021, Doja Cat released her third album, Planet Her. Lead single ‘Kiss Me More’, a funk and disco-inflected summer jam in collaboration with SZA, became another worldwide hit single. At 19 weeks, it broke the record for most consecutive weeks in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 by a female collaboration. The track won a Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, as well as receiving nominations for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Planet Her became the 10th best-selling album in the world for 2021, and received Grammy nominations for Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album. In total, she received eight Grammy nominations for that year, the most by any female artist, as well as five the following year. By the end of 2021, Doja Cat was the best-selling female R&B and hip hop artist in the US.
In 2023, Doja Cat released her fourth album, Scarlet. This one saw her turn towards a less pop-oriented, more rap-focused sound. Single ‘Paint the Town Red’ hit No.1 in 19 countries, including the UK and the US. The song received a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Solo Performance, while the fiery ‘Attention’ received two nominations for Best Melodic Rap Performance and Best Rap Song.
After cryptic social media posts in 2024 lead fans to believe new music was on its way, at the 2025 Met Gala awards Doja Cat confirmed that a new album was on its way, with 'Jealous Type' its lead single. Vie, Doja Cat's fifth full-length album, was released in September that year, with critics lauding her return to a poppier sound. The lead single, as well as tracks such as 'Take Me Dancing (feat. SZA)' and 'Cards', boasted a retro 80s twist on her characteristically shiny and sharp production.
