Belle and Sebastian, die britische Indie Pop Band wurde 1996 im Rahmen eines Sozialprogramms für Arbeitslose von Stuart Murdoch gegründet. Der Name der Band bezieht sich auf ein Kinderbuch der Autorin Cécile Aubry über den Jungen Sébastien und seinen Hund Belle.

Das bislang letzte Album des Künstlerkollektivs, „Girls In Peacetime Want To Dance“, war ebenfalls ein Chart-Stürmer, wie auch die vorherigen. Belle and Sebastian war nie auf kommerziellen Erfolg aus. Doch bereits seit ihrem ersten Album „Tigermilk“ (1996) sind sie Dauergast in den Charts. Der Stil der Band wird vor allem im englischen Sprachraum abwechselnd als Twee-Pop, Baroque-Pop, Jangle-Pop, oder einfach Indie- bzw. Folk-Pop beschrieben. Die Songs beinhalten kleine Geschichten, die Episoden aus dem Leben eines Teenagers erzählen.

Seit der Veröffentlichung ihres Albums „Dear Catastrophe Waitress“ im Jahr 2003 holten sich Belle and Sebastian professionelle Hilfe durch den Musiker, Produzenten und Komponisten Trevor Horn. Das Ergebnis war ein poppigerer Sound als zuvor, was nicht verwunderlich ist, da Horn im Vorfeld schon mit Bands wie Frankie Goes to Hollywood und dem Mädels Duo t.A.T.u. zusammengearbeitet hat.

Stuart Murdoch formt Kurzgeschichten zur lyrischen Songtexten. Diese geben vielen Hörern Halt und Perspektive. Belle and Sebastian machen Musik, die die Schönheit im Alltäglichen erkennen lässt. Mittlerweile kann die Band auf 15 Alben zurückblicken. Belle and Sebastian Tickets gibt es bei Ticketmaster.
